Our Founder

The school carries the ideals of the monk who founded Bharat Sevashram Sangha. Knowing a little about him helps explain what we ask of our students.
Acharya Srimat Swami Pranavanandaji Maharaj was born on 29 January 1896, on the full moon of Magh, at Bajitpur in present-day Bangladesh. He was initiated by the yogi Baba Gambhirnathji at Gorakhpur in 1913. In 1917 he founded Bharat Sevashram Sangha, and he is also revered as the founder of Sri Sri Pranav Math. He passed away on 8 January 1941.
A life given to service
He taught that the purpose of spiritual life is not only one's own liberation but the uplift of all people. He asked his followers to grow strong in character and fearless in spirit, disciplined and compassionate. For him, spiritual awakening and service to society were one path.
His idea of education
He held that true education develops the body, mind, intellect and character together. A young person should become not only knowledgeable but also disciplined, courageous and responsible. That ideal guides the Vidyapith today.
His call to humanity
"This is the Age of Universal Awakening, This is the Age of Universal Assimilation, This is the Age of Universal Synthesis, This is the Age of Universal Emancipation."
