About Us

The Vidyapith

The school building in Tollygunge

Parents often ask who runs the school and how long it has been here. This page answers both.

Swami Pranabananda Vidyapith is an English-medium Higher Secondary school, a unit of Bharat Sevashram Sangha. It is affiliated to the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) and the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE).

Our beginnings

The school opened on 2 January 1975 as Russa Shishu Sandipak, a kindergarten begun by a few teachers from the neighbourhood with 60 children. In 1981 it moved to its present home in the ashram premises of Bharat Sevashram Sangha. Two years later, in 1983, its founders handed it over to Dakshin Sahartali Hindu Milan Mandir of the Sangha.

In 1990 it took the name Swami Pranabananda Vidyapith, in the presence of Srimat Swami Rameshwaranandaji Maharaj, other monks of the Sangha and members of the Milan Mandir. In 2000 the Milan Mandir handed the school over to Bharat Sevashram Sangha itself.

Today the Vidyapith teaches about 3,500 students from Pre-Nursery to Class XII. It celebrated its Golden Jubilee from 4 to 6 February 2025.

Two sections, two shifts

The Primary Section, from Pre-Nursery to Class IV, meets from 6.45 am to 10.50 am. The Higher Secondary Section, from Class V to Class XII, meets from 11.30 am to 5.10 pm. Both run Monday to Friday.

Where we are

The school stands at 27, M. N. Sen Lane, Tollygunge, beside the ashram of Bharat Sevashram Sangha. It lies beside the Metro Blue Line between Tollygunge (Mahanayak Uttam Kumar) and Kudghat (Netaji) stations, and its buildings can be seen from the train.
